 FAQ : Frequently Asked Questions

"It is far better to have absolutely no idea of where one is - and to know it - than to believe confidently that one is where one is not." Jean-Dominique Cassini

What do I get for signing up?

You can use freely the website :
  • to display the charts at different scales
  • to put some waypoints and enter some route planning
  • to save your waypoints or routes in GPX format or directly into your Garmin GPS

But if you sign up, it will be possible to record these waypoints and routes on our servers under your account.

So the next time you will be back on the Marine GeoGarage, the waypoints and routes will be displayed again on the screen (so ready to use them for planning a next trip or to organize and save your waypoints and routes for future use).

Do you have to pay for using Marine GeoGarage ?

Some chart layers (UK & misc., Canada CHS, Australia AHS) are only accessible via some monthly recurring subscription used to pay royalties to some Hydrographic Services.
This is one of the features of the 'Charts Premium' subscription, which is a month to month service with no annual contract.

Today only NOAA (US), Linz (NZ) and DHN (Brazil) and SHN (Argentina) national Hydrographic Services have decided to release freely their nautical maps which can be downloadable on their websites.
Regarding NLHO (Netherlands), BSH (Germany) and WLP (Bahamas), Marine GeoGarage took the option to freely display these charts under copyright license.
So the Marine GeoGarage displays them publicly, the cost for their web hosting being paid by online advertisement.

Note : see 'Nautical maps' menu (next to 'FAQ') to get info about the sources and the list of the charts
